US Army Battle Streamer Set MIL-DTL-14650/1Z

The Army adorns its flag with a separate Streamer for each important action in all wars in which it participated.  The Army currently allows 189 Streamers. The 2 3/4 inch x 4 feet long Streamers have a grommet at the hoist end (left side) to protect the material and provide a device to attach the Streamer to the ring holder and then to the top of the flagpole which is held in place by the top ornament (spear, eagle, etc).

Streamers for the Army Set are made to military specifications.  They are Type I, class 1, size 1 (2 3/4" width x 4' length)

US Army Guidon Streamers

The guidon Streamers are Type II, Class 1, Size 3 (1 3/8" by 2 feet long). They have a similar but appropriately smaller lettering and devices.  Instead of the grommet a sleeve is sewn that allows the Streamer to fit over the top of the guidon flagpole and slides up or down on the pole.  The guidon Streamer has a button hole (eyelet) sewn in the hem and a screw holds the Streamer in place on the wood pole.

Shown below are only a few of the many guidon Streamers.

There are two or more Streamers sewn together at the hoist end and secured with a grommet. The ribbon colors determine whether the award is for HONOR UNIT, HONOR UNIT With DISTINCTION or MERIT UNIT.  The inscription on the top Streamer identifies the award. The Streamer or Streamers underneath give the dates of service for the award eg "2004-05 2005-06".
Honor Unit with Star (Ribbon #228)

Embroidered Devices for Army Streamers

Star

Star A gold star represents citation by a corps, a silver star by a division, and a bronze star by a brigade/regiment. The embroidered gold, silver and bronze stars are centered between the hoist end and the first letter of the inscription on foreign awards.  A blue embroidered star is placed 1½ inches after the last letter of the inscription on the combat infantry streamer to indicate subsequent awards.

Arrowhead Device

Arrowhead Device A bronze embroidered arrowhead is placed 3/4 inch before the inscription on the streamer to indicate the unit made a parachute jump into enemy territory, participated in an amphibious landing on enemy territory or made a helicopter assault landing in enemy held territory as part of an organized force carrying out an assigned tactical mission.

Wreath/Earned Honor Device

Wreath/Earned Honor DeviceEmbroidered two inches from the tail end of the streamer to indicate the battalion of a regiment that has the device actually participated in a campaign. Prior to the Korean War, if one battalion of the regiment received campaign credit, all battalions received campaign credit participation; however, only those battalions that earned the credit would receive the earned honor device. Since the Korean War, only those battalions of the regiment that receive campaign participation credit are authorized to display the streamer.

Palm

PalmLeaves and stem are bronze, outline is green.  The palm is used on some foreign unit awards Streamers (e.g. French Croix de Guerre, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry) to indicate the level of the military command which cited the unit for the award. The palm indicates the award was made by the Armed Forces headquarters of the foreign government. The palm is centered between the hoist end of the streamer and the first letter of the inscription.
